vi·gnette; vinˈyet -noun

Updated: May 10, 2019

Generally, a vignette is defined as a ‘brief evocative description, account, or episode. A small illustration or portrait photograph that fades into its background without a definite border.’ This vivid term not only applies to literature and art, but it also applies to the world of design and staging. In interior design a vignette is ‘a small, pleasing picture formed by grouping several objects- a pocket-size table arrangement that tells a story about you and your home.’

This ‘fairy-garden’ sized aspect of design is affordable, accessible and adds depth to the entire narrative of the room. Any corner or small space in your home that needs a little love will absolutely benefit from a vignette, and you may even have a little fun in the process.  First, identify the space! Second, think of a theme and lastly, let the creative juices flow. Often in the staging of kitchens, we enjoy crafting nooks with themes of coffee, wine, mixology and pasta.

Aside from the obvious theme objects (a french press for a coffee-motif or a wine bottle for a vino corner etc.) play around with lighting, greenery, plants, trays, books and artwork! We have collected some of our favorite tiny lamps and little pieces of art over the years from stores and garage sales; not always knowing where we would use them, but liked the size, color and overall design. Lesson: don’t be afraid to build your vignette library, so that you are prepared when the opportunity comes. If you absolutely love certain items, you will use them and use them often. Many times, people are completely overwhelmed at  the amount of ‘work’ involved in staging or re-designing; but this small and detailed sort of aesthetic requires very little capital and virtually zero manual labor (moving of furniture). Start with one little area at a time, and watch your kitchen, bathroom or bedroom take form.

Good design also includes an element of utility. Can the space be used for everyday life in addition to being visually appealing? Do you enjoy fresh limes/lemons slices often? Make them a part of the vignette! Think artistically and also realistically. We LOVE the look and taste of Pellegrino, we also use and like the look of our wine glasses… both staples in the Adorned2Sell vignette game. Designing vignettes can be a win-win situation, where design meets efficacy!
